Next Steps for Families -Tuesdays, May 6, 13, 20, 27 and June 3, 2008 from 7:00 p.m. -8:30 p.m.
This is a learning series for family members and friends of individuals with dementia (not for the person with dementia). This 5-week learning series provides an introduction to Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Discussion topics will include: the different types of dementia, the resulting changes in the brain, the latest developments in research, planning for the future and helping your family member to remain independent for as long as possible.

Next Steps for Families - A special summer session – Wednesdays, July 2, 9, 16, and 23rd 2008, 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
This 4 week summer series provides an introduction to Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Discussion topics will include: the different types of dementia, the resulting changes in the brain, the latest developments in research, planning for the future and helping your family member to remain independent for as long as possible.

Overview of the three series available to help with moderate to late stages of dementia.

Care Essentials - TBA

A First Link learning series for family caregivers (not for the person with dementia). This 4-week learning series follows “Next Steps” and will focus on the middle stage of Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Topics include: communication strategies, activities of daily living, how to manage behaviours, safety and security of the home environment, and caring for yourself.

Options for Care - Mondays – May 5 and May 12, 2008 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
A First Link learning series for family members and friends of individuals with dementia (not for the person with dementia). This learning series follows “Care Essentials” and will help you identify your options when the care needs of your family members increase. This series is co-facilitated by the Champlain Community Care Access Centre, Geriatric Psychiatry Community Services of Ottawa and the Alzheimer Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County.

Advance Care Planning
This free educational session explains a simple yet important process that can help individuals ensure that their health care wishes are followed if and/or when they are unable to communicate them directly to their health care providers. Issues like consent, power of attorney, living wills, substitute decision making and wills are discussed.
